Pure cotton clothing has good sweating absorption, breathability and comfort, therefore it is very popular and has had encouraged farmers to produce more cotton. Prior to planting, farmers will process the seed and soil with anti-bacterial pesticides to remove any potential harmful species. And to speed up the growth rate of cotton, a large amount of chemical fertilizers were used. Finally before the harvest, farmers also spray Defoliant agents so that the leaves fall off first, exposing the cotton entirely for easy machine harvesting.
Thus in the process of cotton, pesticide agents is extensively used, and averagely on one simple cotton-T-shirt it is calculated to use about 200g of pesticides and fertilizers. The use of various agents and pesticides resulting in soil acidification, destroys nature aspects and is a heavy negative load on our Earth.
This is where Organic Cotton is developed, as it reduces significantly all negative aspect of a normal cotton production.
The conditions to produce Organic Cotton lies in the following three principles:
1.Zero use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Can only be used on land that was intended to use for organic growth, with a minimum of three year preparation prior to plant.
2.The cotton seeds used must not be in contact with fungicides.
3.Growing process: Zero pesticide, zero herbicides, zero defoliant agent, and minimum use of any other chemicals. The process and operation must be certified by United Nations, and by American TDA or European SKAL organic units.
The post-harvest production including spinning, weaving, dyeing and finish process must also deal with natural material and substances as much as possible, all to reduce the overall chemical impact on our environment. However, the use of organically grown cotton farms costs 50% more than the traditional grown cotton, as well as only accountable for about two-thirds of the normal cotton, which makes the price of organic cotton textiles relatively high.
